Singer-songwriter Bhi Bhiman (pronounced ‘Bee-mun’) introduces his new single/music video, “Up All Night,” an appetizer for his upcoming studio album, I’ll Sleep When I’m Famous, slated for release July 2022.
“Up All Night” was inspired when Bhi looked after his young daughter while his wife was away, caring for her dying father.
The forthcoming album, co-produced by Sam Kassirer, was recorded at Bhi’s home studio and reflects the pop sensibility of the rock music Bhi grew up with during the ‘90s.
Speaking about the album, Bhi shares, “These songs deal with the ever-increasing presence of death in our lives. I hope that it can be cathartic to those who’ve experienced loss, not as a downer but as a reality check. The reason we create art to begin with, is that we don’t see enough beauty in the world. And this record is meant to replace some of the beauty that’s been taken from us.”
Raised by Sri Lankan immigrant parents in St. Louis, Bhi grew up listening to grunge music, i.e., Soundgarden. After releasing his debut album, BHIMAN, he was invited to perform on Later…with Jools Holland, where he met Soundgarden and Chris Cornell. Moved by Bhi’s performance, Cornell asked him to join his sold-out North American tour.
Bhi has collaborated with Keegan-Michael Key, Dave Eggers, Rhiannon Giddens, Boots Riley, and Chris Cornell.
Bhiman’s music has appeared in numerous ads, films, and television shows. His cover of “Walk of Life” by Dire Straits from 2013’s covers EP, Substitute Preacher, was featured in an Apple Watch ad starring Alice Cooper, as well as a series of commercials for Xfinity. His original music has also been used in multiple TV shows as well the Ted Melfi film, El Camino Christmas starring Vincent D’onofrio, Dax Shepard, and Tim Allen. Bhiman’s quirky murder ballad, “Ballerina” is used throughout the film, including a scene where Donofrio’s character, shot and lying on the floor, sings the lyric, “we got married in a Walmart, down by the Wrangler jeans.”
Atlantic Records selected Bhi to arrange and perform acoustic versions of hit singles from artists like Galantis, Wiz Khalifa, Kiiara, Steve Aoki, and Mr. Probz.
“Up All Night” opens on low-slung gleaming colors tinted with flavors of Americana and country pop as Bhi’s delicious tenor imbues the lyrics with warm, tender textures. The feel and flow of the music are affectionate and creamily sparkling.
“But it’s not for me to say / Up all night with you / And I’m not going away / Up all night with you.”
Smooth and shimmering with iridescent hues, “Up All Night” delivers mellow, soothing textures and the evocative voice of Bhi Bhiman.
